How dear to this heart are the scenes of my childhood,
When fond recollection presents them to view!
The orchard, the meadow, the deep-tangled wild-wood,
And every loved spot which my infancy knew!
...And e'en the rude bucket that hung in the well-
The old oaken bucket, the iron-bound bucket,
The moss-covered bucket which hung in the well.

These words from poet Samuel Woodworth inspired the "Old Oaken Bucket,"
the legendary trophy shared between long-standing rivals Indiana State
University and Purdue University.
The poem reflects the attitude of native Hoosiers towards their home state,
and since the trophy's introduction in 1925, it has been a coveted item each
university strives to attain each year.
Here in The Villages, members of the Purdue and Indiana State university
clubs share their own version of the Old Oaken Bucket. Created by Bob
Rutkowski and the Purdue club in 2013, the trophy is shared between the two
clubs, going to the winner of the annual college football game.
"Whichever team is the home team in real life, they
have to host the other team here in The Villages," said
Rutkowski, a Purdue alumni and chemical engineering
major. "We thought it would be fun until we lost four
years in a row."
Purdue recently claimed the rights to the trophy
again in 2017 after four straight years of losing to their
in-state rivals. Depending on the outcome of the game,
a "P" or an "I" is added to the chain link on the trophy.
The Purdue club has been part of The Villages
since 2011, when Rutkowski, Tom Sgritta and other
Purdue club founders attended a meeting for the state
of Indiana club and realized a Purdue club did not
exist at the time.
