them to myself in a garden? Knowing your
purpose is a good way to start."
From there, Stout suggests learning
about planting.
"Even people who may have done rose
gardening elsewhere have a lot to learn.
You have to tweak your methods for locality.
Insects and diseases may be different here
than from other parts of the country, and
various classifications of roses have different
growth patterns. After that, it's all about
rose care - feeding, fertilizing, pruning and
preparing for changes in weather."
At club meetings, there is a great deal
of education and sharing of knowledge,
but giving is part of it, too. It all falls in line
with Stout's two-part philosophy: Share
what you know, and share what you grow.
"That's our club motto," Stout said.
"I emphasize to members how we can
multiply our joy by giving roses to anyone
- a neighbor, a friend, someone who's ill or
in the hospital."
While rose gardening starts with seed
and soil, it goes far beyond the bloom.
Stout sums it up with her favorite Chinese
proverb. "Roses leave their fragrance on the
hand that gives them away."

Stop and smell the roses with The Villages Rose Club. The 14th annual Celebration of Roses is a free exhibit
that is open to the public. "People can come and take photos and enjoy," Stout said. "At the end of the event,
we distribute the roses to places like The Villages Hospital, nursing homes, hospice centers and other places."
