With porcelain being such a unique material,
Kornfeld says when a plate or tray goes into the kiln,
about 50 percent of the paint will "bake off," meaning
artists will have to re-paint certain areas multiple times
to achieve the colors they desire.
Kornfeld emphasizes anyone can do porcelain
painting, and though the firing process can take
some time, there is a high level of forgiveness anytime
someone makes a mistake.
"You can take anything that you've ever learned to do
in art and it will be applicable to (porcelain painting),"
she said. "When you get it wrong, you take a wipe and

it comes right off. The only thing is, once you fire it, it's
permanent."
Though her days of teaching children are done,
Kornfeld still is finding ways to share her knowledge
with the world around her, encouraging her students to
grow and flourish like the bright flowers she paints on
porcelain.
"I want to see my students blossom," she said. "My
little ones and my big ones."
