PAUL SATTERFIELD PRIDES
HIMSELF ON PERSONALLY RESTORING
AND MAINTAINING HIS 1967 FORD
MUSTANG FASTBACK
STORY BY MARK ANDERSON | PHOTOS BY ROB WILKERSON
Village of Lynnhaven resident Paul Satterfield prides himself
on having done nearly all of the restoration work on his
1967 Mustang Fastback himself.
With the exception of the body and paint work, everything
else in the car was done by Satterfield throughout the
restoration process.
" I always tell people, this car has never been in anybody's
garage, other than the paint and body shop, " he explained.
" Where we used to live in Virginia, I had a garage with a lift
where I could do all my work. These are labors of love for me. "
And working on the Mustang was no simple task either.
Since Satterfield purchased it in 1995, he's been constantly
tinkering with the classic muscle car.
" I'm an owner/builder, " he said. " I don't do paint and body. (And I
would love to take credit for the paint and body, but I can't do that.) Other than that,
everything that's done on the car I did myself. I built the motor, I cut the front end out of
the car and put a Mustang II front end in it, all of the wiring and electrical work - I
do everything myself. "
A retired airline pilot of more than 30 years, Satterfield says he had some
mechanical knowledge before to restoring the car, but anything else he did
not already know, he taught himself.
" These are just things I learned how to do, " he said. " My dad couldn't pick
up a screwdriver, and just over time, I acquired the knowledge of how to do it. "
Satterfield says his car is a resto mod, meaning that while there are some
aspects of the car he changed, he stayed as close to the original as possible.
" I'm old school, " he said. " All of my cars have carburetors in them - no
fuel injection, because I don't understand that stuff, and I don't want to
understand that stuff. There was a car at a show, a '68 Camaro, that had an
LS motor in it (which most new Chevrolets have). They did a nice conversion and
the job was done well, but when I open the hood, I expect to see an old-school
motor. And that's just me. "
Satterfield says he respects that not everyone has the time or ability to
work on their cars themselves, but either way, owning a classic car is a point
of pride - a pride that is readily evident in the number of trophies sitting in
his garage. Car shows and cruise-ins are his chance to show the Mustang and his other
car, a 1929 Ford 5-window coupe, off to the public.
