Preparing playlists and organizing dance parties is
part of the fun for Carvajal, who spends lots of time
making his selections.
" I choose whatever really appeals to me, " he said.
" I look on the internet and I'm very selective about
music that won't offend anybody. If they use foul
language, I don't play it. And I don't want music that
is too sad. You know, I lost my wife so I don't play
anything that is related to the loss of somebody. I try
to make the place happy. I want everyone to dance. To
me, everything has to be happy. You know, that's why
you retired here right - to be happy. "
Carvajal's role as club president and deejay also
touches on his history and his former career in
broadcasting.
" I had my own show, and I was involved with

" Some people ask me about lessons, " he said. " I
don't give lessons. I say again, 'come to dance, and
enjoy the moment.' You dance the way you want. You
dance like no one is watching. Why should you worry
if you're doing it right? "
While many of the club members speak Spanish,
others do not, but they have a great time just the same.

Carvajal picks up his phone and scrolls to photos
of his younger self, standing beside Tito Puente,
(famous for the hit song 'Oye Como Va'). In another,
he is sitting in a sound booth with jazz legend Arturo
Sandoval, microphones poised near their mouths and
ready to carry the interview over the airwaves.
