The Villages - March 2022 - 7

Disney World was a retirement
community, it would be The
Villages. The second you enter The
Villages, you never know what era you may
find yourself transported to. Part of what
helps make that extraordinary experience
is the incredible number of classic
cars
you see driving around. One minute you're
watching a 1970 Corvette roaring through,
the next minute you're cruising by a 1929
Ford. Here are some amazing cars you may
find transporting you through the years next
time you go cruising through The Villages. Sit
back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
It's not something unique for our parents to leave
us with a possession of sentimental value; maybe
a ring, a watch, a piano, possibly even a china set, but the
same exact car that your father drove over forty years ago?
Both Sandy Turner (president of the British Motor Racing
Club) and the car would be on quite the odyssey before his
1950 Riley found its way under his care. It all began when
Sandy's father was shopping for a Jaguar XK120, but to his
disappointment, he was too tall for it.
" He was a tall guy. He couldn't fit in a Jaguar XK120. He
was so upset, " Sandy recalls.
That was when his father was shown to another car he
might be interested in; it was a car that was already loaded
with history. The car had already seen its fair share by the
time it was sold to Sandy's dad. It had even avoided never
being made again when Lord Nuffield bought the assets of
the car's original manufacturer after it went into bankruptcy
due to the Great Depression. The car proved to be so reliable in
England that it would even be used by the police force there.
Years later, after WWII when the American economy was
performing exceptionally better than that of Britain's, the
makers decided to switch the steering wheel to the left side of
the car and sell it in America. That car was a 1950 Riley.
The car allowed him to move the front seat all the way
to the back seat, which also made it a great family vehicle
for him. The Riley's wear and tear problems are proof of just
how much of a critical role a car plays in the family dynamic.
Demonstrating how the suicide doors to the Riley don't close
properly today, Sandy explained that when his sister first
started driving the car, she would let her friends sit on the
doors when they were open.
He was eight years old when his father brought the car
home for the first time.
" He said, 'I have a new car. I sold the Studebaker' and I
was like, 'you sold the Studebaker? Why'd you do that? I liked
that car.' "
But when Sandy saw everybody in the neighborhood
running to it, he found himself liking the car as well. While
some time passed before becoming its sole caretaker, Sandy's
patience would pay off in 1970. His older sister and younger
brother were nowhere near as fascinated with the Riley as he
was. Sandy said his younger brother got a Volkswagon. " My
dad, because he was a car nut, he bought one of the first
