" Some volunteers are retired teachers or medical
professionals, and they just like to work with kids, "
Connie said. As for CC, " She helped me teach a craft
called 'Keeping My Treasures,' and another on making
beaded T-shirts. The whole purpose is to bring the
generations closer - not just to entertain kids while
they're here. "
Sharing ideas while crafting, working together to
create a keepsake, having meaningful conversations
or serving the community in a volunteer role - these
activities are the glue that binds.
Connie notes that adults and children have a lot
to teach one another, which can be part of the fun.
During a class geared toward granddaughters and
grandmothers, CC was given a list of 20 questions to
ask her grandmother - things like 'how did you talk to
your friends outside of school?'
" My granddaughter was amazed when I explained
how we went to a phone booth, " Connie said,
laughing. " She had no idea what a phone booth was,
so I took her down to Lake Sumter Landing to see the
red booth near the sales center. I explained how it
works - how we put the money in and made the call.
She thought it was the most hilarious thing. She went
home and called her mother to say, 'Guess how Granny
used to call her friends?' "
Connie and CC look forward to future volunteer
opportunities.

" My entire family believes in giving back to the
community, " Connie said.
And while CC, who turns 14 this year, is anxious to
spend time with her grandparents - she has her heart
set on a certain activity in The Villages.
" She'll finally be able to drive the golf cart, " Connie
said. " She's really going to enjoy that! "
