After meeting with Ashford, Hoffman accepted a
position.
" That's how I got here, " he said, scanning the sound
booth as if to take it all in - one last view of the lake
from his office chair, the birds bobbing on distant boats
beyond the pier.
" It's been exciting - this place, the people; they
hang out on our front porch, " he said, motioning
toward residents sprawled out on Adirondack chairs

that face the town square outside the studio.
As for his next adventure, Hoffman will return to his
roots.
" I come from a musical family. My grandmother
was a concert pianist. My older sister was an
accomplished violinist, pianist and vocalist, and
my brother was a trained opera singer. I played the
trumpet growing up, and the drums, the saxophone
and the baritone horn. I did it for my own pleasure, "
he said. " And now, I've got some time, so I'm going to
teach myself to play the piano. "
And while music is still on the menu, he'll be playing
it for an audience of one - himself.
Saying goodbye to a life of broadcasting is
bittersweet, he notes.
" I sure will miss it - yes, you bet. "
