A Realist
Artist Inspired By Nature

dances in the light. Marjorie Dodrill
wets her brush and tells the story on
her canvas.
A realist painter whose primary
medium is oil, Marjorie's art tells
tales of light as it spills across
oceans and land. Her paintings
portray rushing water, blue ripples
and frothy peaks. They evoke
emotion, imagination and memories.
" I have dabbled in abstract, but it has to
have meaning, " she said.
Certain destinations have inspired Marjorie's art
more than others.
" There's a beautiful little town called Mendocino,
where they filmed 'Murder She Wrote'; it was a darling
lumber town and they had a lot of Victorian homes, " she
said. " I was in a really nice gallery there. " Marjorie flips
through her portfolio. On the table beside her, a stack of

albums holds reprints of her work.
" Fandango " features two flowers
whose flared petals are as lively as
the Spanish dance. A painting titled
" Autumn Wine " features plump
grapes dangling among crisp
maple leaves.
" I started doing landscapes then
tried florals, and those first florals
won two awards in a national art
show, " she said.
Unlike some artists, Marjorie didn't
grow up with art and didn't experiment with
colors and pigments until adulthood.
" I was a late bloomer, took art classes in college and
enjoyed them, " she said. " But I got married early and
was raising a family. "
Considering how she might make a living and still
raise her family, Marjorie gravitated toward teaching.
" I really loved working with children, and teachers
