Being a Betty
for Cats' Sake:
Meet SPCA Volunteer Louise Rodey
" In a world full of Karens, I want to be a Betty, "
Louise said as she scooped up a wide-eyed cat in the
Catty Shack, a facility dedicated to the adoptable feline
residents at Your HS/ SPCA.
A Villages resident and long-time volunteer, Louise
admires the late Betty White's devotion to animals.
" Betty was a huge animal advocate - not a lot of
people knew that about her, " Louise said. Following
her passing in late December, fans started a
movement to honor Betty's legacy. " The Betty White
Challenge " urged animal devotes to donate to animal
welfare groups, shelters and organizations on January
17th - the day Betty would have celebrated her 100th
birthday. The movement gained national attention,
spurring generosity across the globe. Donations to
Your HS/ SPCA exceeded $18,000. One anonymous
donor initiated a $10,000 matching challenge.
Area businesses wrote checks and residents
and families brought pet supplies to the shelter
throughout the day.
" The challenge was trending on social media
within 24 hours of Betty's passing, " Louise
said, while going about her daily tasks.
She addresses a listless feline named
" Flopsy, " a new resident that has not
yet assimilated. " (Cats) hide just like
people; they withdraw. And our joy
is to watch them evolve through
touch and cuddling and care. "
The Catty Shack is a small
sunny space, decked out with
automatic feeders, fluffy beds and
feathery toys - a haven for the
homeless felines. Several cats curl up
near the windows, some arch their backs
and yawn or twitch their whiskers in a haze of
dreams. Louise says things can get hectic, however.
" When I pop a can of wet food, there's a
frenzy, " she said, laughing. " Flopsy will venture
out then. "
