As for Villager Marcy Basco, her affection for
horses came early in life, and later led to her interest
in Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses. " I am
a retired reading teacher, and I grew up training and
showing registered quarter horses, so I'd been around
them almost all my life, " she said. After reading
a newspaper article about a literary event with
miniature horses in Ocala, Marcy was intrigued.
" I told my husband, 'We need to go,' " she said.
Once there, Marcy approached a horse handler
and introduced herself. They made plans to chat
later. " I hung around while the kids went up and
had their pictures taken after Debbie had
given her literacy lesson, " she said. Marcy
says the kids enjoy horse-themed
stories with life lessons woven
within. She describes one such
story Debbie published in 2019,
prior to her newest book.
" It's about Mercury and
Sirius, a horse and a dog that
bonded with each other, " Marcy
said. " They instantly loved each
other from when they were very,
very young. " Marcy shares photos
of the two, a miniature blue-eyed
horse and a sheepdog nose to nose.
Another shows the pair entangled in a
bed of grass, and in another they are curled
up like sleeping cats on a pet bed in front of a
fireplace. They are fluffy white with matching dark
spots. The lesson, Marcy notes, is that the while the
horse an dog are vastly different, they only see the
ways they're alike. " To this day, they love to hang
out together, " she said.
After that initial meeting four years ago, Marcy
and Debbie began exchanging phone calls, and
Marcy shared her history and experience with
horses and her background teaching reading. " I told
her I would find a way to get Gentle Carousel to The
Villages, " Marcy said. " What they were doing really
interested me, and I thought more people should
meet the horses and learn about their work. "
Over the years, Marcy has helped raise awareness
of the charity, set up appearances including halftime
shows with the horses at The Villages Polo Club, assist
with grooming the horses at area events, and even
