That experience marked the beginning of bigger
things, both in the freelance photography realm and
in Gloede's social circle too - including a 45-year
friendship with the gentleman he met that day.
" I just saw Mark this past weekend, at the Rolex 24, "
Gloede said. " So that's how it started. And then from
those little stepping stones, I began submitting images
to some of the sponsors and presenting my portfolio to
corporations to solicit assignments. "
Gloede's roster now includes photography clients
such as Ford Motor Company, Porsche Cars North
America, Autoweek Magazine, Miller Brewing Company,
Amoco Chemicals Corporation, International
Motorsports Association (IMSA), and many others.
He's photographed more than 150 professional events,
including The 24 Hours of Daytona, The Trans-Am SeAbove:

Formula 1 races. His photos have been used in print
advertising, posters, yearbooks, annuals, coffee table
books, press kits, event programs, plastic scale model
box art, and promotional materials. His portfolio contains
racing celebrities including; Mario Andretti, Paul
Newman, Patrick Dempsy, Rick Mears, and others.
" I was shooting a lot of weekends in the 80s and
90s. As a freelancer, the toughest were the West
Coast races. I'd leave work early on a Friday, fly to
California, shoot, come back on a red eye into O'Hare
International Airport and then drive home,
take a shower, pack up my film and drop it
off at a lab before work. "
By Monday morning, Gloede would be
back at his desk, making plans to pick up his
film at the end of the day.
" They would develop it the same day
and I'd pick it up after work, go home and
sit over a lightbox or jump in the darkroom
and start printing contact sheets or prints, "
he said. " My favorite races to shoot are
endurance road races. "
