Morgan adds that purebreds often land
in their care, and the shelter currently
has a standard poodle in residence. SPCA
sees a flux of new faces, and you never
know who might show up - or who will
steal your heart.
Mindy is one such example. Trotting in
and out of Morgan's office, tail wagging and
floppy ears erect, the black Labrador puppy
recently landed at Your HS/SPCA, but didn't
stay homeless for long.
" I adopted her, " Morgan said, smiling at
the clumsy ball of fur at her feet. " I had a
service dog that I lost in August, so Mindy is
being trained to be a service dog. "
And while
is
the
population
diverse,
shelter's animal
boasting an
array of species and breeds of all
sizes, including the occasional
equine, rabbits and barnyard
animals, they follow a limitedadmission
policy.
" We don't have to take
everything that comes through the
door, " Morgan said. " The municipal
county shelter next door does -
they're an open admission shelter,
so they have to accept whatever
comes their way, but we look for
temperament. We look at behavior
history and adoptability, things like
that. Because obviously, our goal
is to help as many animals as we
can get adopted, so we want to
be sure they have the potential
to be good pets. And then our
volunteers work with them
on simple commands, basic
training and other things. "
