DRAGON BOAT RACING by MARIANNE LOBAUGH Twenty-two people comprise a dragon boat team: 20 paddlers — two abreast in 10 rows, one steersman at the stern and the cadence drummer or coach sitting high on a chair in the bow. The boat is narrow and long, more than 40 feet from dragon head to dragon tail. Dragon boat racing traces its roots back to China more than 2,000 years ago. IT CAME TO THE VILLAGES IN 2007. 18 MAY 2008
