HINDU WOMAN AND
A BLACK LACQUER
CABINET WITH
BRASS ACCENTS

" This piece was painted with a cat whisker, " he says of his art from Iran. Gracing the
opposite wall are a striking oil painting of a
Hindu woman in elaborate dress, a black lacquer cabinet with brass accents and an Asian
ivory vase with richly painted details.
While touring his home is not a
ticketed affair, it's most definitely a cultural
experience. Gariepy will show you the carved
likeness of the Indonesian Rice Goddess,
esteemed as a protector of crops and a
symbol of wealth and prosperity. Other
cherished feminine forms include statues of
Maasai mothers and their infants, a Buddhist
Goddess of Mercy and elaborately dressed
dolls from various countries.
" My (late) wife collected these, " Gariepy
said of the assemblage of dolls that live in his
mother-of-pearl inlaid cabinet, which came
from a carpenter friend in Egypt. " It's only 150
years old, " he jokes.
Aside from her unique dolls, Gariepy's late
wife also loved camels and amassed over 500
different styles and sizes. A number of weathered saddles are spread out throughout his
home, as well as decorative headpieces worn
by Bedouin women, a lifesize Egyptian sarcophagus, ceremonial trinkets, alabaster vases,
handmade pottery, a genuine shark's tooth
and dinosaur egg fossils.
