A Summer for Adventure
Summer is for clinking drinks with friends and stretching out
poolside. But if you live in The Villages, summer is a time for adventure.
Doreen Lowther found her inner warrior five years ago. The Village
of Poinciana resident picked up a sword and returned to her childhood
roots - to backyard forays and crime-fighting escapades with her
imagination and a stick-sword. After taking her first fencing class, she
discovered it is not as easy as it looks. Still, Lowther was enthralled
from the start. Now serving as president of The Villages Fencing Club,
she and around two dozen members have become great friends -
connected by a common zeal for their combat sport. Read more about

take a stab at fencing.
When retired art educator Annie Dotzauer took a jewelry-making
class, she never imagined where it would lead. With a shaker of frit and
a sheet of glass, Dotzauer fired up a kiln and fell in love with the art of
fusing. A member of The Visual Arts Association and The Villages Art
League, Dotzauer's work has been featured in prominent magazines
and catalogs. She does various shows throughout the year and has
made friends locally and in other provinces.
Beyond fencing and glass fusion, some Villagers are delving into
physical practices as a means to increase strength and ignite a fresh
passion for life. After a car crash left Gianna Ragona Suarez in a
neck brace and experiencing migraines, she discovered an ancient,
therapeutic discipline that ultimately changed her life - yoga.
Suarez shares her journey from chronic pain and a stressful career
in the corporate rat race to studying yoga abroad and opening her
own studio.
"I said to my boss, 'I have to follow my heart I have to go be a yoga
teacher,'" she said. "He threw up his arms and said, 'Are you crazy?'"
Now a Village of Mallory Square resident, Suarez teaches yoga for
PTSD and anxiety, hoping to help veterans and anyone looking for a
soothing, soul-nourishing practice.
"Yoga makes you face your trauma, but it gives you the tools to deal
with it," she said.
What a pleasure it's been to chat with these incredible, active
Villagers. We hope their stories inspire you to pick up a sword, roll out a
mat or pursue a new hobby this summer - comic collecting, perhaps?

passed.
