released its first comic in
1935. A few years later,
the company began
publishing an ongoing title
called "Detective Comics,"
which would eventually
lead to the company's
current name: DC Comics.

ver since the first Superman comic showed up on
newsstands in 1938, comic books have been an
American institution. Comic book superheroes and
heroines are household names around the world - no
matter what age you may be.
Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman and
literally hundreds more - many of us grew up admiring
these characters or hearing their names spoken among
our friends. Some of these heroes and heroines have been
featured in comic book stories for nearly half a century,
providing a rich background and characterization that's
often discussed - and argued about - among fans.

Superman, the world's
first true "superhero"
who had superhuman
strength, could deflect
bullets with his skin and
could leap tall buildings
in a single bound. A
mint condition copy of
"Action Comics No. 1"
sold for $3.2 million in
an auction in 2014.

Release Date: May 1939

The first appearance of
Batman. As opposed
to Superman, Batman
has no superpowers
- he relies on his
superior intellect,
vast wealth and
collection of gadgets
to fight crime. Batman
was introduced as a
grittier alternative to allAmerican hero Superman.
