THE WATCHMAKER

Set
in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1850, " The Watchmaker "
recounts the story of Edwin Turner, an Englishman who
settles in Scotland and learns the trade of watchmaking
from his father-in-law. He is successful in his business until,
because of a series of mishaps, he is accused of stealing six
watches. Sentenced to seven years exile in Australia, the story
addresses social issues, the criminal justice system and the
class system prevalent in Victorian Scotland, all set in the
magnificent backdrop of Edinburgh.
Q: WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO WRITE YOUR BOOK?
I was studying genealogy on Ancestry.com and encountered
my third great-grandfather, Edwin Turner, who is the protagonist
of the story. Amazingly, I
still have a brooch which belonged
to Lydia, his daughter,
and one of the participants
in the story. I was even able
to find a newspaper article
highlighting Edwin's crime.
I thought the story would
make an interesting book.

The descriptions of Edinburgh
are historically and
geographically accurate, as
are the descriptions of workhouses, prison ships, jails and
general living conditions for rich and poor at the time. I hope
that " The Watchmaker " transports the reader to another
world and reflects on the social injustices of an earlier era.
Q: WHAT CLUBS, AC TIVITIES AND HOBBIES DO YOU ENJOY?
I play pickleball and golf regularly; and I like to swim. I am a
member of the Writers League of The Villages, the MBenz Club,
the Classical Music Lovers Club and the Philosophy Club. I also
play trivia at least once a week and enjoy Zumba.
