SUMMER ART FESTIVAL SHOWCASES LOCAL TALENT The Villages Art League and The Villages District Recreation Department proudly present the second annual Summer Art Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 12 at Lake Miona Recreation Center. Admission is free. “Our first event was very popular last year. I think people enjoyed the indoor venue and people are really interested in local artists. We liked the casual and fun atmosphere we had and it’s what we’re aiming for this year, too,” said Nancy Dias, festival chairperson. The event will feature more than 60 Villages artists in a wide variety of mediums, including acrylic, colored pencil, pastel, pen and ink, oil, photography, watercolor, wood and clay sculpture, jewelry, glass fusion and china painting. Original work by these local artists will be for sale. Guests can enjoy live demonstrations and personal interaction with individual artists and the opportunity to ask questions. “The artists’ demos went over very well last year,” Nancy said. “We’ll have activities for kids again this year from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.” Rich Davis, a resident of the Village of Summerhill, was an exhibiting artist last year with watercolor and acrylic paintings and is looking forward to the event in July. Go & Do Entertainment Briefs “Last year’s event was really exciting. There was a lot of traffic and a lot of people interested in art. I know people enjoyed it, both the artists and the people who came,” Rich said. “There were so many different artists there. This year will have even a wider variety. A real congolomeration. Something for everyone,” he added. The Art League will also have art-related door prizes. For more details about the Summer Art Festival, call chairperson Nancy Dias at 751-1033 or Helen Gromadzki, publicity chair, at 750-5651. TWO VILLAGES JAZZ FAVORITES PERFORM TOGETHER Jazz lovers will have the opportunity for an unusual treat on July 22 at Church on the Square. Two talented jazz ensembles will perform with two showtimes, 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The two acts are Lenny Wilson’s Trio and the Valerie Gillespie Ensemble. Lenny Wilson’s group comprises of: Lenny Wilson on piano, Dave Norman on percussion and Dick Garrett on bass. Jymie Charles is their vocalist and John De Paola is their special guest on trumpet and flugelhorn. “The music itself will feature mainly jazz and swing,” Lenny Wilson said. Each group will perform a set and then combine on stage to close the show. Lenny said this will be the highlight. “It’s a concept I’ve been trying to put together in my mind. I thought it would be great to hear both groups play together,” Lenny said. “We have appeared together in previous shows, but never played together as one group.” “Both groups are well-known in The Villages. We’re looking to have a fun and entertaining night,” Lenny said. Tickets are now available at The Villages Box Office. The Valerie Gillespie Ensemble features Joe Renda on percussion, Rick Steuart on keyboard and Valerie Gillespie on vocals and saxophone. JULY 2008
