"This is not fine art; this is fun art," Teri Stillwaugh
tells a room full of dabbling artists. They have come to
take a class, or rather a journey back in time - to the
days of childhood wonder.
"I stress fun and creativity," she said. "I want
students to have the joy and pride they had as kids,
holding up their masterpieces for a spot on the fridge.
Before I start my classes, I say, 'Leave your perfectionist
at the door.' I don't know what perfection is. I doubt I
ever will, but when you are happy with what you are
doing, it just doesn't matter."
Stillwaugh's pre-career in creative education took
place in the playroom, where she lined up her stuffed
animals and taught them art.
"My dad worked nights and I was an only child," she said.
"Art was something I enjoyed and could do quietly, so my
parents provided me with paint and lots of mixed media."

Later she majored in art and launched her career in
1976 when she opened an art shop with her mother in
Washington State.
"I taught the art classes and mom taught cake
decorating," she said. "Pretty soon, mom was backing
away and I was doing all the teaching."
Stillwaugh's classes grew and attracted a range of
students. Soon she was sharing her expertise over the
airwaves.
"A radio host had taken my class and asked me to do
a weekly question-and-answer segment," she said. That
led to television appearances on various DIY shows
- HGTV's "Design on a Dime," "The Carol Duval
Show," "Home Matters" and "Martha Stewart Living."
Attending trade shows and networking with other art
enthusiasts opened other doors for Stillwaugh.
