Play-Doh
First appearance: 1955

Play-Doh was originally devised
(under a different name) to clean
coal residue from wallpaper
in the 1930s. Manufacturing
company Kutol needed a
new way to sell the malleable
substance,
and after an
employee
read a story in
a newspaper
about people
using the product
for crafts, PlayDoh was born.
Matchbox &
hot Wheels
First appearances:
Matchbox: 1953
Hot Wheels: 1968
Then:
Originally rivals, Matchbox
and Hot Wheels both cornered
the toy car market until Mattel
purchased Matchbox in 1997.
Matchbox was known for
producing replicas of existing
cars, while Hot Wheels usually
went with more fantastical or
conceptual designs for its
toy vehicles.
VieW-Master
First appearance: 1939
Then:
Originally developed by Sawyer's
as an alternative to postcards, the
View-Master became an instant
hit after debuting at the New
York World's Fair in 1939. At first,
the cardboard reels were mostly
scenery from around the world,
but as the company grew, Sawyer's
began selling reels featuring
Disney movies and popular
television shows from the 1950s.

Fame, kids have played with an
estimated 700 million pounds
of Play-Doh, only slightly less
than the weight of the Empire
State Building. Today, Play-Doh
offers hundreds of colors and
accessories for kids to enjoy, and
there is even special Play-Doh
cologne with the iconic aroma
the toy is known for.

adults, Matchbox and Hot
Wheels continue making
products today. Collectors
obsess over finding vintage cars
still in the box, while children
love the newer, modern toy

While the cardboard film reels
are a thing of the past, ViewMaster has been able to pivot to
the digital age. Capitalizing on
the popularity of virtual reality
headsets, View-Master now
offers fully immersive excursions
to space and underwater ocean
environments, and kids even can
be part of their favorite animated
shows while wearing the ViewMaster VR headset.
