(although this is disputed) and
published by Parker Brothers in
1935, Monopoly was first called
"The Landlord's Game." The game
was incredibly popular from the
beginning, and during World War
II, the British Secret Intelligence
Service even designed a special
version of the game with hidden
maps, money and other useful
items for prisoners of war held in
occupied territory.

Following the premiere of the
original "Star Wars" movie in
1977, toy manufacturer Kenner
offered a line of posable action
figures of characters from the
film. Response from children and
collectors was so high, Kenner
was not able to produce enough
for the initial release and had
to offer vouchers that could be
redeemed at a later time.

Founded in 1932 in Denmark by
Ole Kirk Christiansen, Lego is an
abbreviation of the Danish words
"leg godt," meaning "play well."
The company originally made
wooden toys until developing
the iconic interlocking Lego
brick in 1958. Classic Lego sets
included spaceships, medieval
castles and pirates.

Today, Monopoly has dozens of
different versions and themes.
These include many major
media franchises as well as
localized versions with streets
and locations from around the
world. New game pieces were
introduced in 2017, including
a penguin, rubber duck and
dinosaur, leaving the battleship,
race car, top hat and dog as the
only remaining original pieces.

reaching theaters
annually since 2016,
Star Wars hype is
again at an all-time
high. Step inside any
toy store and you will
find hundreds of
Star Wars toys on
display, including
the ever-popular
action figures,
now made by Disney.

Now:
Lego products are sold in more
than 140 countries, with dozens of
officially licensed products from
Star Wars, Harry Potter and other
well-known properties. Lego
produced its 600-billionth piece
in 2015, proving the toy is still a
favorite of grandchildren (and the
bane of parents' feet) everywhere.
