aden with college debt in their early years of
marriage, Allen Vanover relieved the budget by
building the family furniture - dressers for the
children, a dry sink, a coffee table and a storage unit.
More than four decades later, Allen's handiwork
still adorns rooms in the Vanover home. A birch veneer
cabinet flanks the front room and 10-inch-wide crown
molding elegantly frames the walls - details Bev and
Allen added to their Grandview model home in the
Village of Pine Hills.
From north to south, the couple has put their
signature style on many homes via their individual
talents and collaborative efforts. And beyond remodeling,
Allen built five of the 17 homes they have owned. It

started in 1978 with their first ranch-style home in Ohio,
although his professional experience began with a career
in education.
"I worked as an industrial arts teacher for four years
before moving into supervision of plan engineering and
facilities management," he said. "I ended up being vice
president of the facilities - in charge of construction
for an orthopedics company. During the summer, I
worked for a builder."
"We've come a long way," Bev added. "Our 45-year
marriage has been somewhat like a business. I'd like to
think I'm the brains and he's the brawn, but that's not
totally true. I get a decorating idea but he usually ends
up tweaking it. We work together."
