BONE HEALTH & EXERCISE: WHY MOVEMENT MATTERS

"I teach a five-course series on the body - about understanding the magnificent machine we're in charge of," he
said. "Some of us don't even know what we have and how
to care for it. Your heart beats 110,000 times a day and
you don't have to think about it. It pumps 12 pints of blood
through 60,000 to 70,000 miles of blood vessels. It just happens. So how do we care for our bodies and how can we improve our health?"
A trained physical educator, Lynch began his career with
Mobil Oil Corporation.
"I took a job as a medical fitness assistant, working in its
headquarters," he said. "The program was geared toward the
executives and we conducted blood tests, stress tests, physical
exams and fitness assessments. We wrote fitness programs for
the employees and they could do them in the company gym
located in the building."
At 23, Lynch was hired to run Chase Manhattan Bank's in-house corporate fitness program.
"I was in charge of around $35 billion worth of lives - people like David Rockefeller," he said. "I ran that program for about six years then decided to start the first medical fitness center in New York City - an entrepreneurial effort. In 1981, I opened a gym in the World Trade Center. We had
a 20,000-square-foot fitness center in the top of the hotel that was built between the towers. We sold it out in six months and it was a huge success. This
was way before gyms were a thing. That morphed my career."
Now in his 46th year in the medical field, Lynch continues to open health
facilities - 35 to date - and to teach in various places - 44 of the 50 states
thus far.
While preparing for a trip to China, he lends some advice on bone
health and the impact of exercise.
"It goes across all the chronic illnesses we see today - whether it's
osteoporosis, diabetes, weight management or heart disease. Everything
is affected when you start moving the
body," he said. "Everything functions
around the blood and the oxygen that
feeds that body. Anytime you can increase circulation, you can improve
health. Exercise is key to that."

Hanlon said.
She recommends weight-bearing
activities each day. A competitive
ballroom dancer, she gets plenty. As
for Village of Ashland resident Daniel
Lynch, pickleball and golf keep
him going. When he's not swinging
a paddle or a club, he's probably
conducting a class or consulting on
medical matters.
