The Villages - July 2022 - 2

CHECKING IN
BY RICA KEENUM
Artists, Athletes and More
This issue shines a light on local athletes and artists whose stories
inspire us. Doug Bloodworth is certainly among them. His quirky, colorful
pop art stands out - but more importantly, brings back our fondest
memories. You won't find sunsets, wildlife or architecture in his collection.
Instead, Doug paints personal objects: comic books and soda cans, plastic
cowboys and white bread slathered with grape jelly. " People call this photo
realism or Americana - pop art, " he said. Artists began exploring this
type of photorealistic art in the '60s, and Doug is among those who've
creatively mastered the process. In his story, he shares how he achieved
astounding effects on canvas, and how his talent, past experiences
and work ethic helped hone his craft. While much of Doug's work is
commissioned by fans near and far, select pieces appear in a handful of
galleries, such as The King's Gallery on Spanish Springs Town Square.
The Villages is also home to countless athletes and seniors who excel
in a range of sports and hobbies. In this edition, we chat with residents
whose scores, stats and accomplishments are worthy of attention
and applause. Village of Pennecamp resident Mike James, captain of
the men's 55 plus and 65 plus competitive tennis teams, found tennis
more than 40 years ago while serving in the military in Indiana. His
competitive spirit led him to forge a competitive team here in The
Villages. He has been to the nationals four times and led a team to the
sectional championship four times as well. This year, the players won
second place against Team Collier from Naples, after an exciting, downto-the-wire
match. For two full days Mike and his team were deadlocked
as they held on until the very last second.
Read about Mike's athletic endeavors, as well as Greg and Debbie
Hamlin's water volleyball, Mike and Kathy Rocchio's archery and Don
Feeney's bowling experiences. Perhaps you'll learn more about a sport
you've been itching to try.
And speaking of sports and activities, The Villages recreation
complexes, centers and neighborhood areas are the perfect place to
gather for games, matches, club meetings and more. With more than
100 fabulous venues, residents have options galore. If you're confused
about how these three types differ, check out the story, in which we
break down the varied offerings. We've also highlighted some of the
hardworking managers who work diligently to ensure residents enjoy all
the amenities every day.
Plus, you'll find all of our usual departments, with stories, photos and
possibly even some faces you know or have seen around town. We wish
you a month of good times, great friendships, savory foods and social
experiences.
Until the next edition, stay cool and connected!
