MIKE AND KATHY ROCCHIO
SHOOTING FOR GOLD
Archery has been practiced as a sport for over 60,000
years, making it one of the oldest sports in the world.
Mike and Kathy Rocchio of the Village of Bridgeport were
introduced to it seven-and-a-half years ago, and to them
it's also the most rewarding sport anyone can do.
" It's just a lot of fun, " Mike said. " That's what I like
about it. I'm still getting better, but I get to practice, try
different things and talk to people. It does teach you to
relax. "
Mike and Kathy couldn't come to The Villages fast
enough when he retired from his 36-year career as a
mechanic supervisor for the Port Authority. Between their
responsibilities at work and raising two children, the couple

of 42-years rarely had the opportunity to even think about
taking up a sport as a hobby. When they moved to The
Villages however, a whole new world opened for them.
" The activities here were unbelievable, " Mike said. " I
told Kathy when I moved here that I'm playing softball
again. " He not only played softball, but became an avid
pickleball and golf player as well.
Archery didn't even come to mind until Mike's sister
came down to visit them.
" My sister did archery up north, " Mike said. " We took
her to the archery range and she told my wife, 'You should
take the safety class, so when I come down, we can go
shooting here together.' "
