Health Donating blood D can boost BY THERESA YOUR CAMPBELL Rolling up your sleeve and donating blood saves lives, yet some men may be surprised to learn being a blood donor is a great boost for their own health. “Men who donate at least three times a year can reduce their risk of heart attacks and strokes by 50 percent,” said Vickie Hodges, a licensed practical nurse and branch manager of Florida’s Blood Centers’ donor site in Lady Lake. She and her staff strive to get the message out to males about the health benefit of being a donor. “Most men are surprised,” added Rosa Vazquez, donor services specialist. “Their reaction is ‘Wow!’” Health Robert Ridgard donates platelets every three weeks at Lady Lake’s Florida Blood Centers.
