GO BIG BLUE

A

ccording to University of Kentucky history, in the late
1800s, students were attempting to choose a shade
of blue as their official color when a student asked the
question, "What color blue?" In response, another student
took off his royal blue bowtie and held it up for everyone to
see. The students chose the royal blue color from the necktie
and the rest is history - the same deep blue is part of the
university's official colors today.
For Charlie Simpson, of the Village of Tall Trees, that royal
blue color is a part of life. It also is a color worth showing off
to the world, as evidenced by his golf car, proudly bearing the
University of Kentucky blue and emblazoned with decals and
emblems in support of the Wildcats.
Hailing from a small town in northern Kentucky just
south of the Ohio border, Simpson proudly displays his
support of the University of Kentucky wherever he goes.
As is often the case with Villagers, Simpson wanted a way
to further customize his golf car. When purchasing a new ride
from Streetrod Golf Cars, Simpson decided to special order
the custom royal blue color in honor of his favorite team.
"I wanted this paint job because Kentucky is blue and
white," Simpson said. "I had to wait almost six weeks for
them to bring this down from (the factory in) Iowa. There's
not another one in The Villages painted like this one."
With a retractable top, an upgraded sound system and
even a cooler for drinks or snacks, Simpson's golf car has
everything he needs when cruising around The Villages.
He prefers to drive with the top down, taking in the Central
Florida sunshine while running errands or going out to
dinner.
"It's fun to drive," Simpson said. "In fact, we drive this more
than we do a regular car. You can go to dinner or anywhere
you want to go in this golf car and it's a lot easier to park."
With such a vibrant blue paint job on his golf car, Simpson
attracts attention wherever he goes in The Villages, and he
often is stopped to talk about the golf car or University of
Kentucky sports.
