THE FIRST ALL AGES 5K ROAD RACE Villagers who love to run won’t want to miss taking part in “The 1st All-Ages 5K Road Race.” The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 13 on the roads around the Lake Sumter Landing Market Square. Madeline Castro, special events coordinator for The Villages Recreation Department, encourages runners to register as early possible for the 3.1mile race, the first of the new Lake Sumter Landing Running Series. Additional races will be hosted Jan. 14 and April 11, 2009. “This is a new venture for us,” Madeline said. “We’re really excited.” In past years, road races in The Villages involved runners running three laps around The Villages Polo Club. Madeline believes that taking the race to the road will be more exciting for runners. Residents age 50 and older can compete in the 5K race with hopes of qualifying for the Florida State Senior Games in December. Medals will be awarded to runners competing in the following age categories: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89 and so on. Applications for the race are available at all recreation centers in The Villages. Runners can go to the Web site districtgov.org. Click on “Recreation,” then under Special Events, see the link for the 5K race, where an online application is available. Runners as young as 15 are invited to participate, too. “We’re hoping to get a good draw for a really competitive race,” Madeline said. She also encourages Villagers willing to help at the race to volunteer their time, and she’d love to see spectators lined along the roads. “ Anyone can come out and watch the race,” she said. “It’s always helpful to runners to have people cheering them on.” For more information, call Madeline at 259-6590. Go & Do Entertainment Briefs SHOWTIME SINGERS WILL PRESENT “ARE WE THERE YET?” Showtime Singers will present “ Are We There Yet?” at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Savannah Center. It’s a show that will take audience members on a fun trip across the United States with songs, dances and a pictorial travelogue. Sharon Pederson, of the Village of Mira Mesa believes that Villagers and visitors will love the production, which is filled with 19 different numbers and guest performers. “We’re dancing in the streets of all the different areas — the West, the East, North and South,” she said, adding that the Showtime Singers will sing songs like “California Dreamin’,’’ “New York, New York,” “Mississippi Mud,” “Chicago is My Town” and more. “Sandi Henson is our guest, and she usually draws a pretty good crowd,” Sharon said. “We’re also excited about having Robbie Riddle’s show choir from The Villages High School join for part of our voyage.” The teens will perform two numbers with the Showtime Singers and then two numbers of their own. A barbershop quartet and a five-piece ensemble also will entertain. Guest cloggers will dance to “Rocky Top” and “Thank God I’m a Country Boy.” “I’m really excited about it,” Sharon said. “There’s some nice choreography happening with dancing in the street, and we’re doing more of a hip-hop with some of those things. It’s fun for us and something different.” She believes audiences will also love the pictorial travelogue filled with beautiful photography from across the country. “Everything that we will sing about will be up on the screen, and that will make it fun for the audience to see,” Sharon said. “ And we want people to realize these are new, exciting concert times for us, with the last show at 7:30 p.m.” Tickets, priced $11 for residents, and $14 for the public, are available at all Villages Box Office locations.
