DADE

The name Osceola pops up frequently around Florida: street names, parks,
a lake, a national forest, a county and it even is part of a name of a Village
near Rohan Recreation Center - Osceola Hills. Born Billy Powell in
Alabama, Osceola had Creek heritage until his family migrated to Florida
and became part of the Seminole tribe. In Florida, Osceola became an
influential leader of the Seminole people, serving as an adviser to Chief
Micanopy and a leader during the Second Seminole War. Osceola remains
an important figure in Native American culture, and his name is instantly
recognizable even outside of Florida.

In his search for the legendary
Fountain of Youth, Spanish explorer Ponce de León became the
first documented European to set
foot in Florida in 1513. He called
the new land "La Florida," meaning "land of flowers" in Spanish.
He arrived in Florida during the
spring season, when plants likely
would have been in full bloom. All
it takes is a simple drive through
any of Florida's natural areas in
the spring and summer to see just
how well the state lives up to its
flowery name.

OSCEOLA

There are several things named
Dade in Florida - Miami-Dade
County, Dade City and perhaps most
significantly, Dade Battlefield Historic State Park in Sumter County.
These are all named after Maj. Francis L. Dade, an Army officer who
died in the Second Seminole War.
Every year shortly after Christmas,
a historic reenactment of the battle
takes place at the state park.
