TomoTherapy: erap erapy: BY THERESA On Target CAMPBELL AMPBELL The diagnosis of cancer is frightening. Yet the good news is survival rates are increasing due to advancements in medical technology, and many Villages residents battling cancer have been surprised to discover that they have the energy to pursue their favorite activities while receiving radiation treatments through TomoTherapy, a state-of-theart procedure that delivers precise doses directly to the cancerous tumor, while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. The treatment is just a golf cart ride away. The Radiological Institute of The Villages has the only TomoTherapy machine in this area, which is hailed as being more successful than conventional radiation therapy. Previously, cancer patients needed to drive to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa or the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Orlando to receive TomoTherapy. “The reason I brought this machine here is because people in The Villages are very intellectual, they are educated, and they want the best,” said Dr. Ganesh Arora, chief executive officer of the Radiological Institute of The Villages, which opened in December. “They deserve the best.” “Our philosophy is that patients come first,” added Dr. David Catalano, radiation oncologist. “With this new TomoTherapy technology, we can provide the most accurate therapy available.” Both doctors find that patients appreciate being able to receive their radiation treatments here at home.
