Beverly Hennessy loves the magic of mixing water and
colors on paper. Every swirl and stroke of her brush has a
surprising effect.
She has dabbled in practically every art medium, but for
her, none compare with the joy of watercolor.
Hennessy gravitated to the challenging, delicate
art form after moving to The Villages and seeing other
residents' creations.
To learn everything she could, Hennessy immersed
herself in watercolor workshops.
Hennessy wanted to share the gift of learning with fellow
residents, so discussions with The Villages Lifelong Learning
College led her to become its art workshop director in 2006.
With careful research and thoughtful
recruitment, Hennessy hires top-notch artists
from across the country to teach about
watercolor, pastel, acrylic, collage, mixed
media and more.
Hennessy has watched local artists gain the
confidence and skill to enter state and national
contests, as well as to start teaching at the
learning college themselves.
Plus, a special bond forms among
attendees.
"Students come from all over the country
to attend the workshops," Hennessy said.
"Some of the students become good friends
as they come back to The Villages every year."
Hennessy learns new techniques from every
instructor, and one lesson especially has stuck with her.
"The trick of an experienced watercolor artist
is to know what to fix or what to leave alone in your
composition," Hennessy said. "My favorite is the semirealism, because the viewer uses her imagination to finish
the image."
Learning from a multitude of talented artists has paid off.
Hennessy's work has been recognized by the Appleton
Museum of Art and the Florida Watercolor Society.
On a larger scale, Hennessy's role of bringing in worldrenowned art teachers has helped The Villages gain its reputation as a destination for a variety of artists, she said.
