Tiny Bell Makes Joyful noise
One year later, this angelic sound rings true for Ellen Hellwege.
W
hen Ellen Hellwege rings this precious
bell, it resonates in her heart.
It's a reminder that her dear friend
Maryellen Blough cares. That she prays
for her. That she loves her.
Last year, Hellwege was horrified to learn she had
breast cancer. Her mammogram revealed the need for a
lumpectomy and radiation.
To comfort her, Blough, a sweet friend she met more
than 20 years ago through exercise classes, reached
out and mailed her the silver-colored bell depicting a
guardian angel.
"All of a sudden, this package came," Hellwege said.
"It was a little tear-jerker. I called her right away and we
had a nice little chat. She knew how to touch my heart."
Their friendship deepened. Although Blough lives in
New Jersey and Hellwege moved to The Villages, they
began to talk more often.
As Hellwege endured the agonizing wait between
testing and surgery, she struggled to keep upbeat.
But the bell shattered the silence and permeated
the air with warmth and love.
"I couldn't ring it enough," Hellwege said. "I was
worried (the clapper) would fall off. It made me
think of her and her great smile and to just keep
plugging on. It gave me comfort knowing that
others knew and cared and were praying for me."
It brings Blough to tears to know that the bell
meant so much to her friend.
"To know that it touched her, that just means
so much that it helped her through," Blough
said. "Angels are a thing for me. I'm strong in
faith, and I know she is as well."
Hellwege displays the bell within arm's reach in
her living room. She placed a sign next to it that
reads, "May there always be an angel by your side."
She continues to take in its joyful noise.
"I just go by and I pick it up and ring it,"
Hellwege said. "It's always there because you never
know what's around the corner."
Whatever that may be, she knows her guardian
angel will help her through it.
