"It's important for women to hear other
stories," said Deb Gruber, group facilitator.
"There's comfort in knowing you're not
alone, and there is a safe place to speak,
scream, or do whatever you need to do to
feel better."
Members of the group share information
on treatments, care and methods for coping.
Guest speakers offer educational resources
that may help women battling breast cancer
or dealing with the aftermath of the disease.
The group is open to all breast cancer
survivors in the tri-county area.
"Whether they were diagnosed last week
or many decades ago, we welcome every
woman," Gruber said.

"We are a mixed group of people with all cancers," said Michele Brady, group
facilitator. "Our long-term survivors give encouragement and hope to those who
are newly diagnosed. Some of our members are caregivers and others just have a
vested interest in the cause."
With the goal of uplifting and supporting, Brady said the group has roundtable
discussions in which they talk about matters important to members. About 30 people attend each meeting, although the group's email roster reaches upward of 200.
"People are free to come and go as they please," Brady said. "They have the
option to pick meetings to attend, according to what speakers and topics interest
them. We have medical professionals come to discuss oncology, radiology
therapy and community resources. We also have nonmedical speakers who give
motivational talks about their own experiences."
You don't have to be Catholic, a church member or even a cancer patient to attend meetings.
