she said. "There's not a lot of artistic
license with some of this stuff, but I
enjoy the research."
If a picture is worth a thousand
words, Lighthipe starts with the
words before ever putting color on
the paper. "You start backward -
accumulate information and then
figure out how you'll tell the story,"
she said.
Unlike other artists, who conjure
emotion through scenes, Lighthipe's
work is based on fact.
It might take her a year to gather
the evidence, to grow the caterpillar
or plant she's portraying.
"It's what I do, and I teach my students how to accumulate
research so that it all works symbiotically," she said. "I wrote
a book called Mother Monarch, a children's book. It's scientifically accurate, depicting the relationship of the butterfly to the
milkweed plant."
On the glossy pages of her book, young readers see the
growth cycle of the beautiful insect via 23 striking illustrations - from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis, and the amazing
southern migration.
"I used bold pops of color, so it's fun but educational,
too," she said. "I had to learn how many legs were on
the body - all the details. Whereas Disney created
