BOOK LOVERS' CORNER
VILLAGES AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT:

The Inn

by James Patterson
The Inn at Gloucester offers
secluded lodging on a rocky
shoreline. This suits former
Boston police detective Bill
Robinson, novice owner
and innkeeper. Robinson
makes a point to leave
residents alone, so long as the
rent is paid. But when Mitchell Cline arrives with a
deadly new method for doing business and a local
law-breaking crew, he brings violence to the Inn.
Teaming up with Sheriff Spears and two fearless
residents, Robinson begins a risky defense. Before
time runs out, the humble occupants of the Inn
will discover they have one of two options: stand
together or die alone.

Chicken Soup
for the Breast
Cancer Survivor's
Soul: Stories to
Inspire, Support
and Heal
by Jack Canfield,
Mark Victor Hansen,
Mary Olsen Kelly

Stories of love, courage, healing and hope inspire breast cancer patients
and survivors. The first-person accounts deal with
real women's fears about death and leaving loved
ones behind as well as problems maintaining a sense
of self post-mastectomy. The authors and editors
provide individual but inclusive perspectives and
even offer the rare narrative of a male breast cancer
survivor. For those looking for comfort in the face of
cancer, this book delivers with a simple reminder that
so many others are fighting, too.

WOOF - A Body Swap Adventure

by Linda Richards
pen name: Dakota Douglas
Village of Summerhill
Ages 8-12 years, up
through middle grades

Trouble follows 10-year-old
Jeremy Turner when he swaps
bodies with a stray dog. His
mother is freaking out, and a
gang of burglars and a crazy
scientist are hot on his tail. Can
he change back or will he be
stuck with four paws, a mouth that won't stop drooling and
big floppy ears forever?

Q: WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO WRITE YOUR BOOK?
A: The idea came to me in a dream. Earlier that day, I had
been thinking about my dog Penrod, who died many years
ago, and chuckling to myself as I remembered his many
human characteristics. He felt emotions such as love, excitement, fear, jealousy and disgust. For instance, he would hide
in the closet when he heard fireworks explode. He would
"punish" me by ignoring me if I left him for very long, and
became jealous if I paid more attention to my husband than
I did to him. That got me thinking - what must it have
been like to be him? That night, I "became" a dog in my
dream and that sparked the idea for WOOF.
Q: WHAT DO YOU HOPE READERS TAKE AWAY
FROM YOUR BOOKS?
A: There's a proverb: Don't judge a man until you have
walked a mile in his shoes. In other words, you never really
know someone until you understand things from their
point of view. I think there would be more understanding if
people were not so quick to judge others and rather tried to
put themselves in that person's shoes to feel what it is like to
be that person. Walking in Rufus' paws definitely gave me a
better understanding of what it is like to be a dog.
Q: ANY THING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO ADD?
A: I am currently writing a series about a group of alien
children shipwrecked on Earth. Now I have to think what it
is like walking in their shoes.
