Learning to work with different materials inspired Emmons to
branch out and explore other ventures, including learning how to design and build custom guitars.
"I was always working and building and making in my stepfather's
basement shop," he said. "When I was 15, my friend and I started buying guitars, and I would take them apart and see how they worked.
Then I would make Franken-guitars with different parts and bodies,
and that's where I fell in love with it."
Later in life, Emmons opened his own guitar shop, selling custombuilt guitars for clients around the country. During this time, he dabbled with weapon-smithing as well, which led him to designing custom
lightsabers - all the way down to machining hilts and pommels, wiring any lights or sound effects and assembling circuit boards to bring it
all together.
With the delicate machining required to build a lightsaber, precision is a necessity, and he says his equipment needs to be finely tuned
to make sure the saber exactly meets the specifications laid out by the
blueprints he receives from other designers involved with the project to
build Tran a special saber.
"I love lathes," he said. "You can make almost anything on a lathe. I
can't afford a huge lathe, so what a lot of crafters do these days is they'll
buy this lathe and then rebuild it (using better parts). You've got to take
everything apart, buy metal parts and put it all together again."
