{ FOR THE OF A RT } Prior to teaching, Lan used books to understand how to best demonstrate each lesson. " I break down the techniques - we use step-bystep instructions, " she said. Students receive handouts and watch video presentations to learn the essential elements. Several finished pieces sit framed and on display in the classroom. Lan points to a colored pencil drawing of a strawberry. She explains how the picture progressed - from scoring paper to adding texture to layering colors that deepen the flesh of the fruit. Those who master their first project can take their art further to build on their skills. A parrot sketch serves as Lan's example. She explains how the piece calls for more detail, and the addition of a shadowy background. Yet another picture digs deeper. " With this one, we learn how to make (an object) pop, " she said, " to make it see-through. " The framed sketch features a dandelion with tiny seeds embedded in its fluffy white head - so true to life you can imagine it floating on the wind. Lan smiles, redirects her attention to the class, and says, " Do they make it perfect - no. But do they enjoy it - yes!
