Time to Impact:
Constant time is the
most important goal
in putting. Regardless
of the length of the
putt, time from setup
to impact is always the
same. Whether a short
putt (four feet) or a long
putt (32 feet), the stroke
should take one second
from setup to impact.
Stroke Distance:
Putting distance is controlled by the length of the
stroke. The longer the putt, the longer the stroke.
Regardless of the length of the stroke, be sure to
keep the same time! The research revealed exact
dimensions for the backswing length and the
follow through. The dimensions were determined
on tour-speed greens, so when you play greens
that are slower, slightly increase your stroke distance
and tempo (but still keep the same time).
Stroke Path:
For all putts, the path of the
putter is straight back and
straight through. In addition,
the face of the putter
remains perpendicular to
the target line. This becomes
difficult to achieve
as the length of the stroke
increases, but minimizes any
chance of directional error.
