Health Diabetes Newly diagnosed with diabetes? Don’t fret. Diabetics can live long, healthy, happy lives. NOVEMBER 2008 Diabetes BY THERESA living well with CAMPBELL “Diabetes can be managed. It’s a disease that you can live with,” said Nancy Smith, president of The Villages Diabetes Support Group. That’s the message she believes is vital for residents to know. Yet Nancy does understand the fear, frustration and depression some people feel whe hearing the diagnosis for the first time, after test results show that their glucose (blood sugar) level is too high. “It was overwhelming,” the Village of Sunset Pointe resident said, recalling back seven years ago when she learned she had Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, where one’s body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin — the hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Nancy is not alone.
