R OSIE T H E RIVETER Above: She's a World War II icon. Rosie the Riveter was a factory worker whose wartime efforts inspired women and made her famous. Her motto: We can do it! And Rosie certainly did. During her time in the workforce, she helped increase productivity and quality in factories. "We think of combat and war in terms of the military," Lumpkin said. "But really what made the difference in the success of World War ll were women who rallied to build our planes, ships and everything else. Rosie the Riveter was one of them. Here are some of the rivets she practiced on, along with her first paycheck. She'd worked 80 hours a week for a month to earn $135."
