The Villages - December 2008 - (Page 4)

YEAR IN REVIEW by Theresa Campbell What will you remember most about 2008? Villagers’ answers were varied, but included topics such as the election, the economy, the rise and fall of gas prices, this area’s retail growth and other exciting things happening in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown. Linda Webb, of the Village of Ashland, recalled that most of the national news of 2008 reflected on economic woes across the nation. Just like many Villagers, she was concerned, but she chose to focus on the positive areas in her life. “Personally, 2008 has been a year of thankfulness,” she said. “I’m thankful that I can live here, that I have wonderful friends. It has been a year of personal growth for me, spiritually, and in my art.” “I will remember the presidential campaign, which has been on everybody’s mind, and the economy,” said Sonny Henderson, of the Village of Woodbury. “We did fine, we didn’t have to cut back that much — yet — and I know some people did have to cut back.” “But, life still goes on in The Villages,” said Sonny, who continued enjoying his time on the greens. DECEMBER 2008 “As long as we can get our golf in, it’s good,” he grinned. Golf, he believes, is one of the joys in life, along with many Villages events and activities. He thought it was great when LPGA legends came to town, along with golfer Stewart Cink. “When they do these things, it’s nice for The Villages and residents, there’s no doubt about it,” Sonny said. Villagers also have been treated to continual retail growth in 2008, with more shops and restaurants to enjoy, including the new restaurant at Havana Country Club featuring George Stella, a celebrity chef and Food Network veteran, as one of the owners. “People (outside The Villages) have said, ‘Are you crazy? Opening a restaurant in this economy?’” George said. “But, we came here because we had heard The Villages is the hottest place to be.”
