The car also had a special toolkit in the
trunk that White says he got rid of
when he was younger.
" I had to send to the Netherlands
to get the toolkit and
other stuff, because when I
was young, I threw all that
stuff away, " he said, laughing.
" I wanted speed. This kit that I
bought is an original kit, and the
guy selling them had three left. He
bought a lot of stuff from the (Facel)
factory when it closed, so I was
lucky to get that. "
When doing restoration work,
White relied on the help of his nephew,
who he jokingly says is the only person allowed
to work on it.
" My nephew is the only one who ever
touches it, " he said, laughing.
White wanted to repaint the car during
the restoration and he planned to stick
with the original black color, but he says
his wife Sandy had a different idea.
" This car was one of five that was painted
black, " White said. " I wanted to paint it
black, but the wife said if she was paying
for half of the restoration, she wanted to
paint it her wine color. (Laughs) This was
one of (Facel's) colors. "
Today, White takes the car to car shows,
cruise ins and other special events around
Central Florida since moving here last year.
In the more than half a century he's owned
the car, he's only added 11,000 miles to
the odometer.
" I drove it more back in the '70s, but as
it got more valuable, I garaged it, " he said.
" It only had 53,000 miles on it when I
bought it, and now it's got 64,000. "
White says he has yet to see another Facel
Vega around The Villages, and he has a
book sent to him by a French car club that
lists all of the known owners of the rare vehicle.
Though the number of the cars continues
to dwindle, White is proud to own
his own piece of automotive history and
share it with other car enthusiasts around
Central Florida.
