SUITCASE BASICS
 Casual daytime

 Dress for activities

California is comfortably laid-back. Jeans, shorts,
casual tops, and T-shirts are acceptable daytime attire
almost anywhere you go. Simple styles offer more
fashion mileage, so pack neutral and versatile pieces. A
white tee, dark denim jeans, black or navy pants, and a
slip dress or two will cover most vacation fashion needs.

Even if you don't splash into the Paciﬁc, your hotel pool
or hot tub will beckon, so pack a swimsuit. Do you need
specialty clothes for hiking, camping, bicycling? Ramp
up your daytime wardrobe with a few nice dresses or
slacks and collared shirts for wine-tasting or a concert.

 Outerwear
No matter your destination, a lightweight jacket and a
sweater or ﬂeece will serve you well. Even the desert gets
chilly at night-you'll want something to wrap around
that sleeveless dress or tank top you wore all day.

Three pairs of shoes will get you through any trip. 1)
Sandals or dressy sneakers you can wear shopping or
wandering through museums. 2) Beeﬁer walking shoes
for longer excursions or hiking. 3) A chic pair of ﬂats or
wedges (loafers for men) to go with dining-out clothes.

California is a supersized state with huge swings in
topography and weather, so pack according to the
season. A trip to the northern coast demands warmer
clothing, while desert and inland destinations require
lighter fabrics. The Sierra Nevada has warm summer
days but winter temperatures below freezing.

Sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat are essential in the
California sunshine. A scarf can make casual sportswear look more dressed up. Pack a multi-purpose belt
or two but go light on jewelry: Basic earrings and a
simple necklace can be worn every day. A cross-body
handbag works well for shopping and evenings out.
