Spend for training within Fortune 1000 companies is down by as much as 20%, and resources within training organizations are down in proportion. Taking the biggest hit are contract instructors, designers and training suppliers who predominately provide course delivery. But, good news is on the horizon. Many corporations are now looking to outsource design and development to prepare for the impending economic rally. You may not hear about many of these deals because demand-side companies want to protect privacy, but RFP activity has been high and new deals are being closed. Many perceive outsourcing to be a bad thing, but the truth is that job growth for training professionals has been greater on the supply side for many years. This will definitely continue for the foreseeable future. Strata 1 suppliers are currently in strong demand of instructional design to assist them with e-learning, serious games and simulations. You may also hear about Strata 1 companies acquiring Strata 3 content development companies to quickly access talent. Clearly our industry is changing. Corporations investing in training recognize that e-learning is a financially responsible way to educate and market to their customers. It’s not surprising that most investment dollars target customers and channel partners as opposed to employees (revenue versus expense). The big question is whether the stimulus package will translate into training activity for new employees of recovering companies and start-ups. From where I sit, the evidence is still out. But don’t doubt that as the economy returns, the need to train employees will grow Doug Harward is CEO of Training Industry, Inc., and a former learning leader in the high-tech industry.
