Talent management matters—organizations with superior talent management strategies outperform their peers. (See Figure 2.) Today more than 35 percent of all large organizations have a talent management leader, and almost one-third have a strong strategy in place. At the same time, the integrated talent management systems market is maturing at a rapid rate. In 2009, Taleo acquired its largest competitor. The company also made great progress on its systems for performance and development planning, making it the largest talent management software provider. SuccessFactors, the largest provider of performance management software, significantly upgraded its talent acquisition software and is moving toward an end-to-end solution. ADP, CornerstoneOnDemand, Halogen, Kenexa, Lawson, Plateau, Oracle, SAP, Silkroad, Softscape, Saba, Salary.com, SumTotal, Ultimate and Workscape have all expanded their platform offerings to provide an end-to-end solution. In the coming year, some of the standalone talent management systems companies are likely to be acquired—particularly those in the talent acquisition, compensation and learning technology areas. Organizations are snapping up talent management software at a rapid rate. Yet they still say that their single biggest technology issue is the integration of these systems with each other. Even though most of the platform providers have plans for end-to-end solutions, very few have everything a business needs today. Therefore, one can expect continued focus on integration and mergers in this market.
