F O C A L P O I N T THREE LESSONS IN DRIVING IMPACT BY TRACY HOLLISTER Corporate learning leaders are always on the lookout for ways to increase the impact and effectiveness of training initiatives. Based on research conducted in 2009, that road to greater impact begins with a three-item checklist to keep the journey progressing: 1) Have a clear destination in mind and multiple checkpoints along the way; 2) Keep an eye on the road ahead by actively supporting succession management initiatives; and 3) Fuel your travels by leveraging the latest technologies to increase both participation and engagement in training. Goals, Metrics and Checkpoints Having a clear vision of success and a commitment to monitor and measure progress steers learning initiatives in the right direction, reducing the time to impact. This is true whether your corporate learning department is directly serving internal clients in another department or has hired a learning services provider to do so. In the study “Best Practices in Working with Learning Service Providers,” respondents emphasized the need to develop a vision for the desired future state and specifically define the services to be provided, as well as the goals and metrics by which performance will be evaluated. They further recommended that governance teams monitor progress, communicate about initiatives every other week and hold meetings between key stakeholders every other month. Metrics should be reviewed monthly and reevaluated every other month, while objectives should be reevaluated and remapped to metrics quarterly. With today’s business goals changing as often as they do, such communication plans ensure that learning groups continue to drive impact in the right target areas. Having a good measurement plan in place before the training starts provides the last “progress check” when the training is complete: Did the training improve the right outcomes?
