CASEBOOK Training Under Construction: Building Homes & Lives at Habitat for Humanity B Y T I M S O S B E Learning is designed as an instrument of change, a tool with which people can build better lives, stronger companies and opportunities of all types. When the outcome of the learning is helping low-income families secure safe, decent and affordable housing, the stakes couldn’t be much higher. At Habitat for Humanity, Connie Steward oversees an international team charged with developing Habitat leaders, staff, affiliates and volunteers—not to mention providing resources for training homeowners on a wide range of topics. It’s a critical mission with many rewards, not the least of which is the pride that comes from helping improve the lives of others. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead S helter and warmth are the most basic of human comforts, but the sad truth is for some people, those comforts aren’t automatic. For many people, securing and purchasing safe, decent and affordable housing is a vague dream at best. But thanks to organizations like Habitat for Humanity, the dream is real. Built from scratch in a small town in Georgia, and later brought to the national stage by former President Jimmy Carter, Habitat for Humanity today is a leading global organization with a vast network of affiliated groups and individual volunteers who share one vision: To make a difference in the lives of families in need of affordable housing. 37 TrainingIndustry Quarterly, Winter 2011 / A Training Industry, Inc. ezine /
