Wayne L. Helping Tree Farm Flourish 2009 Wesley R. Meier Outstanding Inspecting Forester of the Year Award By Young Editor’s Note: The Wesley R. Meier Award was established in 1998 to honor the work, life, and passion for forestry of Wesley Roger Meier, a former outstanding and dedicated volunteer inspector for the American Tree Farm System in Wisconsin. Though he lost his life to cancer in 1994, the award shines as a living memory of his exemplary work for ATFS, for which he volunteered for 14 years. In having this award bestowed in his name, Mr. Meier has been honored by the Tree Farm inspectors of his day and by those who come after him. Preece KATHlEEN The American Forest Foundation realizes Tree Farming succeeds because of folks like Wayne L. Young. But as the 2009 Wesley R. Meier Outstanding Inspecting Forester of the Year told the 300-plus Tree Farmers and other forestry professionals gathered at the National Tree Farm Convention in September: “Tree Farming will flourish because of you.” This forester from West Swanzey, New Hampshire, brings an appreciation for the roles of both landowner and inspector to each woodlot he approaches. Young has been a volunteer inspector for the Tree Farm program for more than 26 years. During his career he has enrolled 81 landowners as Tree Farmers and conducted more than 300 re-inspections to maintain woodlands as Tree Farms. “He is one of the most dependable and trusted inspectors of our program,” says New Hampshire Tree Farm Re-inspection Chair John O’Brien. “I can always count on him. He volunteers to assist others whenever the need arises.” Young has served the forestry community of New Hampshire in a number of capacities, including as a member of the Forest Advisory Board for the State of New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development; the Cheshire County Cooperative Extension Advisory Council; the Standards Working Group of the Forest Stewardship Committee; the New Hampshire Timberland Owners Association; the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and its New Hampshire division; the Conservation Commission for the Town of Swanzey; and the Standards Working Group of the Forest Stewardship Committee. Young is considered one of the most active private consulting foresters in the Cheshire County area, and one of the most active Tree Farm inspectors, according to his colleagues. His dedication to and involvement with Tree Farmers is reflected in the quality management of his clients’ properties: Three Tree Farmers were named Cheshire County Tree Farm of the Year and two of his clients received top consideration for the New Hampshire Tree Farmer of the Year. Young’s belief in the Tree Farm program and commitment to sustainable Tree Farmer JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010
