In 1902, when a group of businessmen formed a hunting club, they also established a model for joint management and stewardship over what was then a sportsmen’s paradise. In the early years of the growing nation, the cedar of Lenape was harvested and used to make shingles for the burgeoning growth of cities east of the Mississippi, such as Philadelphia. Many of the trees of Lenape’s forests provided boards for Lenape Farms is an unusual Tree Farm, described by its owners as “a family of families” who have found a way to blend their long-term interests into a sustainably, stewardship-driven land use ethic. “Lenape Farms Inc. is a unique ownership,” says Robert Williams, nominating forester for the 2009 Northeast Regional Tree Farm of the Year. “They do their thing and leave the forestry to the professionals.” 22 Tree Farmer JULY/AUGUST 2010
